12.00 First Steps In Leadership – BP’s Successful Young Adventurers Program Targets The Leaders Of Tomorrow
BP’s innovative “Young Adventurers” program offers promising students from around the GCC a unique learning and self-development experience that is both challenging and fun. It aims to instill in its 14 to 17-year-old participants an adventurous and enterprising spirit, while helping them to develop the “soft” skills they will need to succeed in higher education and in the workplace. Based on a series of weekend adventure camps, the program has run successfully for nine years, with more than 3000 student participants. BP believes that engaging students in this age group is critical to developing the region’s future leaders, whether in the public or private sector. The program complements BP’s other efforts to support youth leadership, such as the Tawteen Leadership Academy in Abu Dhabi, as well as its in-house graduate development schemes. The case study will highlight the role that the private sector can play in supporting skills development in the pre-employment age-group and in encouraging young nationals to consider careers in the private sector.

The ever changing external environment has had a direct, as well as indirect, impact on programs and activities that were targeted to meet the needs of Nationals. Consequently, many of these plans have changed. Budget cuts, downsizing, reducing salaries, scaling back, cancelling projects, and minimizing recruitment efforts are some of the common buzz words that have plagued this period of uncertainty. In this regard, the speaker will provide insight into some of the practices and approaches organizations can employ to improve the retention of employees.
